History of Pawnee Rock

There are a number of different stories to explain how Pawnee Rock got its name.  Some weave a tale about Kit Carson mistakenly shooting his mule because he thought it was a Pawnee Indian, while others point out it was sacred ground for the Pawnee tribe.  Regardless of how Pawnee Rock came about its name, the city has garnered a rich history.  It was a major military outlook post, helped fuel the railroad, and was even a robust quarry for some time.
